Key Notes

  • A Thinking Ape acquired Island Hoppers assets and rights for $4.5 million upfront, with up to $500,000 in additional cash consideration.
  • The transaction closed in August and was disclosed on November 6 after earlier commercial restrictions delayed the announcement.
  • The DECA subsidiary will lead publishing and development, with investment planned for content, ongoing operations and attracting players.

Embracer has added Island Hoppers to its mobile portfolio through A Thinking Ape, the DECA Group subsidiary that will now lead the farming adventure’s development and publishing. The purchase carries a $4.5 million upfront price, with another $500,000 possible through an earnout.

The companies announced the acquisition on November 6, but the transaction was completed in August. Embracer says earlier commercial restrictions prevented disclosure, so today’s release confirms an ownership change that has already taken place rather than a newly signed agreement awaiting approval.

A Game Acquisition Worth Up to $5 Million

The deal covers the full assets and rights to Island Hoppers, previously owned by Nexters Global, part of GDEV. It is an acquisition of the game, not a disclosed purchase of Nexters or its wider catalog.

Payment is in cash. The maximum consideration reaches about $5 million only if the additional earnout is paid, making $4.5 million the firmer figure for comparing the initial commitment.

Embracer estimates a payback period of 2.5 to 3.5 years from the acquired asset’s projected cash flows. That is management’s forecast, rather than money already recovered or an independently verified measure of future profit.

Farming and a Missing-Brother Mystery

Island Hoppers launched in October 2023 and is available on iOS, Android and browsers. It combines farm development and estate restoration with exploration, environmental puzzles and story quests.

The game’s official description follows Emily, who travels to a tropical island searching for her missing brother. Her investigation leads into the history of an ancient civilization, linking the farming loop to a larger mystery rather than presenting it as a standalone building game.

Maintaining the family estate and farm supplies resources for further exploration. Expeditions and minigames give players activities outside that home base, while the story supplies reasons to open new areas and investigate the island’s past.

For someone unfamiliar with the title, the acquisition therefore concerns an existing casual adventure with several connected systems, rather than a newly announced game that still needs to reach players.

A Thinking Ape Takes Over Development

A Thinking Ape plans further investment in content, ongoing game operations and user acquisition, meaning the marketing used to bring in players. The announcement does not provide a schedule of new areas or events, or describe changes to player accounts and purchases.

DECA points to the operator’s experience with Party in My Dorm, which launched in 2010 and continues to serve a community more than 15 years later. Its stated approach is to support established games over long periods, building on an existing audience rather than relying only on new releases.

Another recent casual-game transaction took a different form. We reported on Supercell completing its purchase of Metacore, bringing both the Merge Mansion developer and its game team into the company. That deal involved full ownership of the studio, with financial terms undisclosed.

The two announcements illustrate why the object of a gaming acquisition matters. Supercell described a developer joining its organization; Embracer has disclosed the purchase of a specific game’s assets and rights. Island Hoppers players now have a named operator responsible for its next stage, while the timing and scope of future content remain to be detailed.
