Key Notes
- Daily game-page creation on itch.io rose from around 3,000 in early August to roughly 6,000 by late October, while the platform says downloads and purchases have not doubled.
- The storefront hinted that AI may help explain the increase, but it published no measured AI share or breakdown of the additional pages.
- Existing itch.io rules already address automated mass uploads, while its disclosure system identifies generated content and requires asset creators to label generative-AI material.
The number of new game pages created each day on itch.io has roughly doubled in two months, according to figures shared by the independent games storefront. The increase has not been accompanied by a doubling of downloads or purchases, raising questions about how much of the additional output is finding an audience.
The platform posted a chart on November 1 showing daily page creation rising from around 3,000 in early August to roughly 6,000 toward the end of October. Asked about the cause, its account hinted at generative AI, but did not publish a breakdown identifying how many pages involved the technology.

More Pages Without a Matching Doubling of Activity
The graph covers August 3 through October 30 and tracks page-creation events. Those figures describe activity by people publishing on the platform; they are not a count of completed commercial releases, unique developers or games that have all entered its discovery listings.
In a follow-up, itch.io said downloads and purchases had not doubled. It did not provide the corresponding totals or growth rates, so the statement does not establish that either measure was flat or falling. It also gives no basis for calculating a change in average revenue per game.
For developers, the distinction matters. More pages can mean more competition for attention, but the chart alone cannot show whether established games are losing players, whether newcomers are reaching different audiences or how much of the increase consists of small experiments.
itch.io Hints at AI Without Quantifying Its Role
The clearest indication of the platform’s thinking came in another reply. Its account invited a user to guess the explanation and included a robot emoji. That points toward AI as a suspected contributor, rather than supplying evidence that every additional page was generated with it.
The published figures contain no comparison between AI-assisted and other projects, no measure of their quality and no account of which tools creators used. They therefore cannot establish an AI share of new uploads or isolate AI from other possible reasons for the increase.
The concern connects to a broader storefront debate. We recently covered Valve’s acknowledgment that generative AI has aggravated game cloning on Steam, alongside its reluctance to restrict developers by the tools they use. For itch.io, the immediate evidence is a rise in page creation and a question about discovery, rather than an announced change in submission rules.
Existing Rules Already Address Automated Mass Uploads
itch.io’s quality guidelines already prohibit using automated systems to mass-produce product pages. They identify minimally curated, predominantly algorithmic or AI-generated material as a potential spam problem. Pages that fail those standards can lose eligibility for browsing and search even when their direct links remain accessible.
The storefront also introduced AI disclosure in November 2024. Its project settings distinguish generated graphics, audio, text and dialogue, and code. Disclosure is specifically required for asset creators, whose untagged generative-AI assets are not eligible for the browse index.
Those policies distinguish generative content from ordinary game systems such as enemy behavior, pathfinding and procedural levels. The latest chart does not announce a blanket AI ban or demonstrate how many pages violate existing rules. It shows that the pace of creation has accelerated substantially, while the platform has yet to publish enough information to explain the increase in detail.
