Key Notes

  • An anonymous letter proposes more than €5 million as an initial contribution toward resuming The Sands of Time remake, subject to Ubisoft’s agreement.
  • The writer says they want no sales share, franchise rights or creative control, while the proposal does not verify available funds or establish a development restart.
  • Ubisoft canceled the remake during its January portfolio reset, citing quality targets and the additional time and investment needed to finish it.

An anonymous Prince of Persia fan says they are willing to put more than €5 million toward reviving Ubisoft’s canceled The Sands of Time remake. The proposal, shared in an open letter on Reddit, asks the publisher for a formal channel to discuss financing the project’s completion.

The letter describes that sum as an initial budget, subject to an agreement, the project’s viability and Ubisoft’s conditions. It is an expression of interest in funding a restart, rather than evidence that Ubisoft has accepted financing or resumed development.

A Funding Proposal Without a Revenue Share

The writer says financial returns are not the objective. They are not seeking a share of sales or ownership of the Prince of Persia intellectual property, and do not want to influence Ubisoft’s creative direction or business decisions. The stated aim is to help the unfinished game reach players.

The request leaves the decision with Ubisoft and asks to be directed to the appropriate department. That makes it different from a campaign to buy the franchise or a fan team announcing its own remake: the proposed work would still depend on the publisher choosing to bring back its project.

The letter does not establish the writer’s identity or verify that the stated funds are available. It also gives no new estimate of the work needed to finish the game. The size of the proposed contribution therefore cannot be treated as the cost of completing the remake.

Ubisoft Canceled the Remake Over Quality and Resources

Ubisoft stopped development in January as part of a wider portfolio reset. In its official statement, the Prince of Persia team said it had been unable to reach the required quality and that continuing would have demanded more time and investment than it could responsibly commit.

The team also said the cancellation did not mean Ubisoft was abandoning the franchise. That preserves a distinction between the future of Prince of Persia as a series and the fate of this particular remake; it does not amount to a commitment to restart development if outside money becomes available.

The project had already passed through several years of changing plans. Ubisoft’s September 2020 reveal initially set a January 2021 release, with development led by its Pune and Mumbai studios. A June 2024 update later described full production at Ubisoft Montreal with support from other teams and a planned 2026 launch.

Those earlier announcements explain why the cancellation struck fans after such a long wait. They also document how far the schedule had moved since the original reveal, without establishing how close the final version was to release when Ubisoft stopped work.

The Remake Was Part of a Broader Portfolio Reset

Ubisoft’s January 21 investor presentation listed six discontinued games: The Sands of Time remake, four unannounced projects including three new intellectual properties, and a mobile title. The company also allocated more development time to seven other games as it revised its roadmap.

Insider Gaming later reported that the affected projects included Assassin’s Creed Singularity, a mobile game also planned for PC, and the ending of support for Assassin’s Creed Rebellion. Those identifications are the outlet’s reporting; Ubisoft’s presentation did not publicly name the remaining projects.

We previously covered Ubisoft’s comments about Watch Dogs, another franchise it continues to value without a confirmed new mainline release. A publisher’s interest in retaining a series and a decision to fund a specific game remain separate questions. The fan’s letter now puts that second question back to Ubisoft for The Sands of Time.
