Key Notes

  • Santa Monica Studio has moved God of War Laufey from February 16 to May 20, 2027, a delay of 93 days.
  • The PS5 adventure puts Faye in the playable lead as she fights through the Everywhen to protect Kratos and Atreus.
  • The studio says it will use the additional time to finish the game and share more updates before release.

God of War Laufey has moved from February 16 to May 20, 2027, pushing Santa Monica Studio’s next PS5 game back by just over three months. The developer confirmed the delay on November 4, saying it will use the extra time to finish the game.

The change affects a new mainline entry built around Faye, the warrior also known as Laufey and the mother of Atreus. Santa Monica said it would share more updates before release, but offered no detailed account of the remaining work.

Faye Takes the Lead in the Everywhen

The story begins after Faye’s death, when she awakens in the Everywhen, an afterlife shared by gods from different mythologies. She discovers that her arrangements to protect Kratos and Atreus are in danger and has to find a way back to her family. Santa Monica’s reveal described a world where the flow of magic has been disrupted.

That premise brings a character whose legacy shaped the 2018 game into the playable lead. It also gives Santa Monica a setting beyond the familiar Nine Realms, while keeping Faye’s relationship with Kratos and Atreus at the center of the story.

The studio has described combat that draws on the movement of the Greek-era games and the character-focused world-building of the Norse entries. Faye’s abilities emphasize momentum, aerial attacks and soul magic. One demonstrated power separates an enemy’s soul from its body, letting her strike it directly or knock it into another opponent.

What Has Already Been Shown

Faye acquires a sword after meeting its guardian, Rue, and can also use the Serpent Bow. Sony’s equipment details describe customizable armor, sword components, bow scales and magical Catalysts. These provide different perks and abilities, giving players choices beyond the appearance of Faye’s gear.

The Standard and Digital Deluxe editions are already available for preorder. The deluxe package includes additional armor and weapon cosmetics, an in-game resource pack and a digital mini artbook. Sony says the in-game items unlock through story progression.

Sony separately announced a $149.99 Collector Box with a light-up statue, oracle cards and a physical mini artbook. That box is sold without the game. The November 4 delay statement addresses the game’s release date and gives no updated shipping timetable for the merchandise, so collectors should check their retailer’s order information.

May 20 Becomes the New PS5 Date

PlayStation 5 remains the announced platform. Players who had set aside February 16 for launch will now need to plan around May 20, a shift of 93 days. Santa Monica’s message attributes the additional time to finishing and improving the game, without announcing a change to its story, platforms or editions.

We recently covered The Duskbloods moving into 2027 after its network test. Laufey’s postponement now changes another prominent console release on next year’s calendar, with Santa Monica providing a specific replacement date.
