Key Notes
- Minecraft’s native Switch 2 edition launches October 27 with Vibrant Visuals, the Super Mario Mash-Up Pack and support for carrying over Switch worlds.
- Eligible digital Switch owners can obtain Standard free in most territories through January, while physical owners have a different discounted offer.
- Split-screen and some Marketplace content do not support Vibrant Visuals, and Nintendo-device Minecoins remain within the Nintendo ecosystem.
Minecraft’s native Nintendo Switch 2 edition is scheduled to arrive today, October 27, with Vibrant Visuals, an updated Super Mario Mash-Up Pack and support for carrying over existing Switch worlds. Digital owners of the older version have a limited-time route to the Standard Edition at no charge in most regions.
Nintendo’s listing confirms today’s release date. This is a version built for Switch 2, rather than simply the existing Switch game running on newer hardware. Availability and upgrade options should be checked through the relevant regional eShop.
The Free Upgrade Has Important Conditions
Mojang’s upgrade details limit the free Standard Edition offer to owners of a digital Switch copy. The promotion runs through January 2027 and is available through Nintendo eShop, rather than as a universal entitlement across other platforms.
There are regional exceptions. Mojang lists upgrade charges of 100 yen in Japan, 30 New Taiwan dollars in Taiwan and 25 baht in Thailand. The headline offer therefore should not be read as identical pricing everywhere.
Physical Switch owners have a different option. Nintendo says launching the Switch version on a Switch 2 between October 27 at 9 a.m. Pacific and January 31, 2027, at 9 a.m. Pacific produces an in-game invitation to buy the digital Ultimate Collection at a discount.
That is a discounted purchase, not the free Standard Edition upgrade offered to eligible digital owners. The invitation’s opening time falls at 16:00 UTC today; it should not be mistaken for a separately verified global unlock time for every edition and region.
Vibrant Visuals Comes With Compatibility Limits
The new edition adds enhanced lighting, shadows and reflections through Vibrant Visuals. All editions include the Super Mario Mash-Up Pack, updated to support the new presentation.
The visual mode is not available in every situation. Nintendo and Mojang specifically exclude split-screen and certain Marketplace worlds and content. A family playing together on one screen should therefore expect a different graphics configuration from someone exploring supported content alone.
The publisher also confirms that Switch worlds can carry over. For returning players, retaining an established build can be more important than starting a fresh map to see the lighting changes. The store listing establishes transfer support without promising that every piece of purchased content behaves identically under the new visual mode.
Choose an Edition Before Spending Again
Standard is the base option, while Deluxe and Ultimate bundle additional Marketplace content. Mojang lists three add-ons and 700 Minecoins for Deluxe; Ultimate includes five add-ons, additional Character Creator items and 1,000 Minecoins.
Mojang’s terms say included Minecoins, and Minecoins bought in Minecraft on a Nintendo device, must be used within Nintendo’s ecosystem. Players comparing bundles should distinguish the game upgrade from the extras rather than assuming the currency can be moved to another platform.
Online cross-platform play requires a Microsoft account, while online multiplayer on the console requires a Nintendo Switch Online subscription. Those access conditions remain separate from eligibility for a free or discounted edition.
We reported on Nintendo’s continued support for physical games. Minecraft’s launch illustrates why the format of an existing purchase still matters: a digital copy and a cartridge can lead to different upgrade offers, even when both previously played the same game.
