- Digital pre-orders open alongside the demo, and the complete Switch 2 release will support wireless local play, online cross-play and all Free Title Updates.
Monster Hunter Wilds will get a free Prologue Demo on Nintendo Switch 2 next week, giving players an early start before the full game’s December 4 release. Capcom has set the download for October 19 Pacific Time, which is October 20 in the UK.
The publisher’s October 15 announcement confirms two useful features: demo save data can carry into the full game, and nearby Switch 2 owners can hunt together through local multiplayer. Online multiplayer will not be available in the trial.
A Head Start Before the Full Release
The demo is intended to introduce the opening of Wilds’ story, with the hunter’s character creation included in Capcom’s promotional material. Save transfer means players who decide to buy the game can keep that initial progress rather than repeating the introduction.
Capcom’s existing demo on PC covers the prologue through Chapter 1-3, To the Forest. The new Switch 2 announcement focuses on the same Prologue Demo concept, with local play added to the features Nintendo players can try.
Digital pre-orders open alongside the demo. The dates refer to the trial and the start of digital sales in advance, not an early release of the complete game. Nintendo of America’s reveal trailer separately confirms December 4 as the full Switch 2 launch date.
Local Co-op Has Different Rules From Online Play
For the demo, playing with friends means connecting Switch 2 systems locally. Capcom’s announcement artwork depicts multiple handhelds in the same space, and its accompanying note explicitly excludes online multiplayer.
That distinction matters for anyone planning a group session before December. The trial supports gathering nearby with other Switch 2 players; it is not a way to join friends remotely on PlayStation, Xbox or PC.
The full Switch 2 release has a broader multiplayer offering. Capcom’s official reveal lists wireless local play, online cross-play and all Free Title Updates. Cross-play lets players on different supported platforms hunt together, while local wireless play connects nearby Nintendo systems.
In its earlier Switch 2 interview, VGC reported producer Ryozo Tsujimoto’s interest in bringing back the experience of people gathering around a table to hunt. The demo’s local mode gives players a way to sample that approach ahead of launch.
A New Handheld Home for Wilds
Monster Hunter Wilds is already available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. Its hunting loop sends players into changing environments to track large monsters, gather materials and craft stronger weapons and armor for the next encounter.
The Switch 2 version adds another platform to that shared adventure. Capcom’s September reveal also names Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance, the major expansion planned for 2027. That future expansion is separate from the free demo and the December base-game launch.
The wider series continues to sell beyond its newest entry. We recently reported that Monster Hunter Rise passed 20 million copies worldwide, showing the scale of Capcom’s established hunting audience. That is a separate game’s sales milestone, not a Wilds player total.
For Switch 2 owners, the immediate date to watch is October 19 PT or October 20 BST. The free download will offer an opening look at the game and its local multiplayer, with progress that can continue in the paid release on December 4.
