Key Notes

  • Modern Warfare 4’s full campaign is playable now through qualifying digital Standard or Vault preorders across current consoles and PC storefronts.
  • DMZ early access follows on October 20 before the full October 23 launch, with campaign completion rewards usable in Multiplayer and DMZ at full release.
  • Game Pass does not include the game at launch, while PC players need an SSD, TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot alongside the published hardware requirements.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4’s campaign early access is now live, giving digital preorder customers the complete story a week before the game’s October 23 release. The opening comes ahead of a second access window for DMZ on October 20.

Activision confirmed the rollout on October 16. The campaign spans 16 missions across the Korean Peninsula, Paris, New York and Mumbai, following Private Park Hyun Jun during an invasion while John Price pursues the figure behind it.

Both the digital Standard Edition and Vault Edition qualify. Players who primarily want to finish the story before multiplayer arrives therefore do not need the more expensive edition to start playing now.

Which Purchases Include Early Access?

The eligible platforms are PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC through Steam, Battle.net or Xbox on PC. Campaign early access remains available until the full release, so the opportunity is still open to people placing a qualifying digital preorder during the coming week.

Physical Standard Edition buyers are outside the announced digital-access offer. Activision’s edition guide also confirms that Modern Warfare 4 will not be available through Game Pass at launch, and that there are no PlayStation 4 or Xbox One versions.

Xbox Play Anywhere is supported for qualifying purchases through the Xbox console or Xbox on PC stores. That means one purchase can cover those two Xbox platforms; it does not grant an additional Steam, Battle.net, PlayStation or Nintendo copy.

The cross-device purchase option fits the wider Xbox approach we recently covered, with Microsoft developing a family of console and PC experiences. For Modern Warfare 4 buyers, however, storefront choice still determines where the purchased game can be played.

Campaign Rewards Carry Into Later Modes

Progressing through the campaign unlocks operators, cosmetic items and XP tokens. The rewards include the Cho, Dallas, Luca, Oh-Ji, Kal, Dunn, West and Park base operators, alongside a calling card, loading screen and emblem.

Activision says those rewards will be available for use in Multiplayer and DMZ when the full game launches. The schedule separates three milestones: campaign access on October 16, DMZ early access on October 20, and the complete release on October 23.

That gives story-focused players a head start before the other modes open. It also means campaign availability should not be mistaken for an early launch of the entire multiplayer package.

What PC Players Need Before Starting

Activision’s published PC requirements specify an SSD with 115GB of space, a broadband connection, TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot. Additional storage may be needed for mandatory updates. Preloading for digital PC purchases began on October 15.

The recommended configuration pairs 16GB of RAM with an AMD Ryzen 5 3600 or Intel Core i7-8700K and a Radeon RX 6600 XT, GeForce RTX 3060 Ti or Intel Arc B580. Activision targets 90 FPS in multiplayer on High settings with that tier; this is a publisher specification, rather than a measured campaign result.

Beenox and Infinity Ward also list ultrawide display support, separate world and weapon depth-of-field controls, and a built-in benchmark. The benchmark reports CPU and GPU performance alongside frame-rate statistics and suggested adjustments, giving PC players a way to assess their own settings before the wider rollout.
