Key Notes
- Control Resonant passed one million copies worldwide three weeks after launch, making it the fastest-selling game in Remedy’s history.
- The milestone gives Remedy’s first self-published release of this scale a strong opening, although revenue and profitability remain undisclosed.
- Remedy’s earlier three-to-four-million-copy planning target concerned a 100% return on investment, meaning double the money invested rather than simply breaking even.
Control Resonant has sold more than one million copies worldwide, reaching the milestone three weeks after its September 24 launch. Remedy Entertainment announced the result on October 15, calling the action RPG the fastest-selling game in its 31-year history.
The result gives Remedy an early commercial success for its first self-published release of this scale. Chief executive Jean-Charles Gaudechon described the opening as “a very strong start,” while emphasizing that the game is reaching both existing Control fans and newcomers.
A Faster Start Than Alan Wake 2
Alan Wake 2 previously held Remedy’s sales-speed record. In a February 2024 disclosure, the company said the survival-horror sequel had sold one million copies by the end of December 2023, following its October launch. That reporting window covered roughly two months; Remedy did not identify the precise day it crossed the threshold.
Control Resonant’s three-week milestone establishes a quicker reported opening. It does not establish which franchise will ultimately sell more over its lifetime. Launch pace and long-term sales measure different things, particularly for games that can continue finding buyers through discounts, additional releases and sequels.
The new announcement does not provide a platform breakdown, revenue figure or profitability update. Its headline figure counts copies sold, rather than everyone who has played the game. There is also no disclosed split between returning Control players and people entering the series for the first time.
Dylan Faden Takes Control Beyond the Oldest House
Control Resonant launched on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Its Steam listing puts Dylan Faden at the center of a paranatural crisis in Manhattan, taking the sequel beyond the Federal Bureau of Control’s Oldest House.
Dylan is searching for his sister, bureau director Jesse Faden, while confronting threats that have spread into the city. The sequel combines character progression and supernatural abilities with a shapeshifting melee weapon called the Aberrant. Its forms include a two-handed hammer and paired blades, changing the emphasis of combat from the original game’s signature firearm.
Exploration also builds around distorted environments and gravity anomalies, which affect traversal, puzzles and combat positioning. Those changes give the sequel a distinct playable identity within the same setting, rather than simply repeating Jesse’s journey through the bureau.
Gaudechon said Remedy wants to keep supporting and expanding both Control and Alan Wake. He did not accompany the sales announcement with a timetable for another game or a specific new content release.
One Million Copies Is Not a Profitability Disclosure
The milestone also puts Remedy’s earlier financial ambitions back into context. At its 2024 Capital Markets Day, when the project was still called Control 2, the company outlined a lifetime sales assumption of three to four million copies to generate a 100% return on investment, as documented at the time.
That target should not be confused with breaking even. Remedy’s annual report defines a 100% return as doubling the money invested. The historical unit-sales assumption was a planning framework, not a new forecast issued alongside this week’s announcement.
Nor does reaching one million copies reveal what percentage of the investment has been recovered. Prices paid, storefront deductions, marketing spending and other costs affect the money retained from each sale. Remedy has not supplied the figures needed to make that calculation here.
We recently reported on Alinea Analytics’ estimates for EA Sports FC 27, another strong opening in the autumn release calendar. The distinction in sourcing matters: those figures were analyst estimates, while Control Resonant’s million-copy milestone comes directly from its developer and publisher.
