Key Notes
- Xbox says two separate agreements for Ninja Theory have fallen through, overturning the planned move to new ownership announced in July.
- Employees will enter consultation on a proposed closure while Microsoft continues to explore alternative outcomes.
- The update leaves the future of Senua uncertain, but it does not announce a final studio shutdown or confirm the game’s cancellation.
Ninja Theory is facing a possible closure after two agreements intended to secure the Hellblade developer’s future fell through. Xbox has begun a consultation process with employees, changing the outlook for a studio that Microsoft had previously planned to move to new ownership.
In its September 22 restructuring update, Xbox said it would consult staff on a proposed closure while continuing to consider other paths. The company did not identify the parties involved in either failed agreement or explain why the arrangements collapsed. The announcement presents a shutdown as a proposal, rather than a completed decision.
The July Sale Plan Has Hit a Dead End
The development follows the July announcement we covered, in which Xbox said Ninja Theory had entered terms to join a new owner with funding for Senua. The intention was to preserve development of the upcoming action-adventure outside its existing ownership structure. Two failed agreements now leave that route unresolved.
There is a meaningful distinction between an intended sale and a successful transfer. The July announcement outlined a way forward, but did not name a buyer or confirm that ownership had changed. September’s update shows that negotiations have not delivered the stable outcome the studio and its players were waiting for.
Microsoft’s other studio departures have progressed differently. Xbox says Compulsion Games and Double Fine returned to their management teams in August, and Undead Labs has also completed a transition. Those outcomes underline how uncertain Ninja Theory’s position remains: the company has supplied a consultation plan, but no replacement agreement.
Senua’s Future Is Now Uncertain
For Hellblade fans, the immediate question concerns Senua, the studio’s next game. Ninja Theory revealed it in June as an action-adventure set after Hellblade II, targeting 2027. Its proposed combination of deeper combat, exploration and puzzles depends on a team being able to carry development through to release.
The restructuring statement does not provide a revised launch window, confirm a development handover or explicitly cancel Senua. A proposed studio closure makes the project’s future less secure, but it is not evidence that another developer has taken over or that the game has officially been abandoned.
Consultation Comes Before a Final Outcome
The consultation process and the search for alternatives need to be followed separately. Employees face uncertainty over their jobs, while an alternative arrangement could still change what happens to the business. Xbox’s wording leaves that possibility open without identifying a concrete rescue plan.
We previously covered the broader Xbox restructuring behind the studio divestments. For Ninja Theory, the next decisive news will be a confirmed agreement, an outcome from the consultation process or an official update on Senua. For now, the failed deals have moved the story from a planned transfer to the risk of losing the studio altogether.
