Key Notes
- Xbox says Ninja Theory has entered terms to move to new ownership, with funding intended to complete and develop Senua.
- The proposed transfer forms part of a broader restructuring that also affects Undead Labs, Double Fine and Compulsion Games.
- Senua remains announced for 2027, but Xbox has not named Ninja Theory’s buyer or confirmed that the transaction has closed.
Xbox plans to sell Ninja Theory, the British developer behind Hellblade, as Microsoft reshapes its first-party studio portfolio. The proposed move comes less than a month after the studio revealed Senua, its next action-adventure, and is intended to keep that project moving under new ownership.
In a July 6 staff message, Xbox chief Asha Sharma said Ninja Theory and Undead Labs had entered terms to join new owners, with funding to complete and grow Senua and State of Decay 3. The announcement does not identify Ninja Theory’s prospective buyer, disclose a sale price or confirm a completed transaction.
A New Owner for the Hellblade Developer
For Ninja Theory, the central question is how an ownership change would support the team and its next game. A proposed transfer can preserve a studio as a working development business, but the announcement leaves the eventual operating structure and publishing arrangements unresolved. Players have a commitment to continued development, rather than a detailed account of who will oversee it.
The studio is part of a wider shift in Microsoft’s portfolio. Compulsion Games and Double Fine are set to return to their management teams, with their intellectual property, existing catalogs and funding for upcoming projects. Ninja Theory and Undead Labs are described separately as moving toward new ownership; those routes should not be treated as identical deals.
Xbox also said its publicly announced first-party games were not being canceled as part of the reductions. That statement supports the plan to continue Senua, although it does not settle the practical details of a studio transfer or provide a new milestone for the game.
Senua Is Still Targeting 2027
Ninja Theory introduced Senua at the Xbox Games Showcase on June 7. The project follows the events of Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II but broadens the series into an action-adventure with more tactical combat, traversal and puzzle-solving. Its announced release window is 2027, with Xbox Series X|S, PC and PlayStation 5 among the platforms.
Studio head Dom Matthews described a deliberate move toward greater player control while retaining the series’ character-led storytelling. An interconnected world, rather than a conventional open world, is part of that direction. For players, the ownership announcement concerns the organization building that game; it does not announce a replacement creative vision.
The Transfer Still Needs Clear Terms
A change of owner and a finished game are separate milestones. The next useful update would identify the buyer, confirm that the transfer has completed and explain what it means for the development team. Until those details emerge, the most concrete information remains Xbox’s stated intention to fund the project through the transition.
The sale plan also puts Ninja Theory’s next chapter in a different context from the usual reveal-to-release cycle. Senua’s gameplay ambitions have been outlined, but the business supporting them is changing. Fans now have two developments to follow: progress on the action-adventure itself and the terms under which its creators will keep working.
