Key Notes
- Ninja Theory employees across programming, technical art and sound have reported losing their jobs or facing redundancy, with no confirmed total.
- The reports follow Xbox’s announcement that two agreements fell through and staff would be consulted on a proposed closure.
- Senua was announced for 2027, but the staffing losses leave its future uncertain without an official cancellation announcement.
Ninja Theory employees have started reporting layoffs and redundancy risks as the Hellblade developer faces a possible shutdown. Public posts point to disruption across several development disciplines, rather than a change confined to one small part of the studio.
VGC reported on October 5 that staff had described their situations on LinkedIn, following posts first highlighted by journalist Chris Kerr. Some employees said their jobs had already ended, while others said they were at risk. That distinction means the posts do not establish a single confirmed layoff total.
Staff Posts Show Cuts Across Departments
The affected roles cited in the report include gameplay programming, technical art, sound design, character art and performance capture. Gameplay programmer Katrin Mair and technical sound designer Alessio Mellina were among the employees discussing job losses or redundancy risks. The range of disciplines points to disruption in the production work behind Ninja Theory’s games.
Mair’s post, reproduced by VGC, expressed sadness that the team would not finish what it had been working on. That is a significant account from a developer, but it is not a formal publishing announcement. Individual employee posts also cannot establish the status of every project or the final outcome for the studio.
Two Failed Agreements Preceded the Layoffs
Xbox announced last month that two separate agreements for Ninja Theory had fallen through. The company said it would consult employees on a proposed closure while continuing to explore alternatives. We covered those failed agreements as a change from the earlier plan to keep the studio working under new ownership.
That plan dated back to July, when Microsoft said Ninja Theory had entered terms for an ownership transfer with funding for Senua. The sequence matters: a prospective buyer was not the same as a completed sale, and the September update confirmed that negotiations had not secured the studio’s future.
The new staffing reports add evidence of the impact on employees. They do not, by themselves, confirm that Ninja Theory has formally closed. The proposed shutdown, the search for an alternative and the status of individual jobs remain related but distinct parts of the story.
Senua Has No Confirmed New Outcome
The uncertainty extends to Senua, the action-adventure Ninja Theory unveiled at the Xbox Games Showcase in June for a 2027 release. The project was presented as a broader gameplay direction for the Hellblade universe, with more combat choice, traversal and puzzle-solving alongside its character-focused narrative.
Its future has not been officially confirmed in the reporting on the job losses. Neither a new development team nor a revised release schedule has been announced there. Treating the game as formally canceled would go beyond the available information, even as departures raise serious questions about how production could continue.
For players, the next meaningful update needs to address both the people making the game and the project itself. A final closure decision, a replacement ownership agreement or a direct statement about Senua would resolve different pieces of that uncertainty. The employee accounts already show that the cost of the failed transition is being felt inside the studio.
