Roguelike

Roguelike takes its name from the 1980 game Rogue. Traditional definitions emphasize turn-based movement on a grid, procedural dungeons, item discovery, and permadeath. Modern usage is broader and often describes games built around repeated runs, changing layouts or rewards, and starting over after failure. Titles that keep action combat or permanent account upgrades are frequently called roguelites to distinguish them from the stricter tradition, but the boundary is debated. What unites the family is adaptation: players learn systems and make decisions under conditions that change from run to run.
