Mod is short for modification. It can be as small as a new interface icon or as ambitious as a total conversion with original maps, rules, art, and stories. Mods may fix issues, improve accessibility, add languages, rebalance systems, or create entirely new experiences. Installation ranges from copying files to subscribing through an official workshop. Support and permission vary by game, platform, and license; multiplayer mods may also trigger compatibility or anti-cheat problems. A mod changes an existing game, whereas a standalone fan game is distributed as its own software.
