Key Notes

  • GTA VI has an Australian R18+ entry dated August 27, 2026.
  • The record is for a self-selected demonstration.
  • Violence, sex and drug use reach high impact, while themes, language and nudity are strong.
  • A later GTA V PC record already lists several high-impact elements.

Grand Theft Auto VI’s Australian classification listing flags high-impact violence, sex scenes and drug use, reinforcing the adult tone of Rockstar’s next open-world crime game. Its R18+ rating places the submitted material above Red Dead Redemption 2’s Australian classification, although the comparison with GTA V depends on which version is being examined.

The official classification record is dated August 27, 2026, and identifies the material as a “Demonstration (Self Selected).” That qualification matters: the entry should not automatically be described as a separate certification of the complete retail game. A comparison shared by GTA 6 Countdown has brought the ratings back into discussion.

Three Content Areas Reach High Impact

The listing’s matrix places violence, drug use and sex at high impact. Themes, language and nudity sit one step lower, at strong impact. Its consumer advice summarizes the main concerns as “High impact violence, sex scenes and drug use.”

Those labels describe the intensity of material assessed, rather than revealing individual missions or a count of explicit scenes. The record does not establish how often particular content appears throughout the full game, or whether players can avoid it.

Australia’s rating criteria consider frequency, intensity, context and the overall effect of six content elements. Detailed, sustained, realistic or interactive depictions can increase their impact. High impact is the level associated with R18+; very high impact falls into Refused Classification.

How GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2 Compare

The headline comparison needs a version check. GTA V has more than one Australian database entry, and a later PC classification already identifies several high-impact elements. Comparing a single older GTA V chart with the GTA VI listing can therefore make the difference look broader than it is.

Selected Australian Classification Records

R18+High-impact violence, sex scenes and drug use
GTA V

R18+High-impact themes, drug use, violence and sex; online interactivity
Red Dead Redemption 2

MA15+Strong themes and violence; online interactivity

The PC record for GTA V, dated July 22, 2015, is marked as a modified version. Its advice includes high-impact themes, drug use, violence and sex. GTA VI’s listed material therefore does not exceed every GTA V classification across those categories.

Red Dead Redemption 2’s original classification, dated September 5, 2018, is MA15+, with strong themes and violence. The difference here is clearer: GTA VI’s submitted demonstration carries a higher age restriction and impact level than that original Red Dead record.

What the Rating Means Before Launch

For Australian players and parents, R18+ is a legally restricted adult category. The government’s ratings guide says access is restricted to people aged 18 and over. It is a more specific purchasing guide than a general claim that a game is mature.

Rockstar’s official site still lists GTA VI for November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. We previously covered the June 25 opening of preorders in our preorder coverage. The rating discussion adds content guidance to that release timeline.

The database offers a concrete indication of the game’s adult subject matter, but it cannot settle whether GTA VI will be Rockstar’s most explicit or most mature game overall. That broader judgment would require comparable records for the same kinds of submissions, alongside evidence from the finished game.
