A new Gears of War: E-Day preview says The Coalition rebuilt the next Gears entry from the ground up in Unreal Engine 5. GamesRadar+ wrote that the team is treating the prequel as a chance to preserve the series’ identity while modernizing its systems.

The project focuses on Emergence Day, returning Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago to the start of the Locust War. That setting lets the studio lean back into horror, vulnerability, and linear tension after the broader spaces and experiments of Gears 5.

The preview also emphasizes that E-Day is not simply a nostalgic reset. The Coalition is rebuilding animation, combat, cover mechanics, and environmental detail to make the game feel familiar but not mechanically frozen in the Xbox 360 era.

For Xbox, the game has extra weight because it is being positioned as a flagship exclusive at a time when the brand is under pressure to define what exclusivity still means. If E-Day lands well, it could give Microsoft a clearer first-party identity heading into the holiday season.
