Arrowhead Has No Helldivers 3 Plans as It Focuses on Helldivers 2

Key Notes

  • Arrowhead has no current plans for Helldivers 3, with Pilestedt saying a distinct sequel would need to coexist with Helldivers 2 rather than compete for the same community.
  • Around 95% of the studio remains focused on Helldivers 2 while a small team prototypes its next game, which has not been announced as a sequel.
  • Helldivers 2 already connects PC, PS5 and Xbox players through cross-play, giving Arrowhead an existing community to support and expand.

Arrowhead Game Studios has no current plans for Helldivers 3, with chief creative officer Johan Pilestedt arguing that a similar sequel would compete with the game the studio is already supporting. His priority is to keep developing Helldivers 2 rather than push its community into a replacement.

Speaking to Rock Paper Shotgun in an interview, Pilestedt said a separate sequel would need to differ enough for both games to coexist. The comments leave that possibility open, while making clear that a third entry is not Arrowhead’s present plan.

Most of Arrowhead Remains on Helldivers 2

Pilestedt said 95% of the studio is focused on Helldivers 2, while a small team is prototyping its next game. Arrowhead has around 150 employees and wants to control its growth rather than automatically expand sharply after a hit.

The prototype is not an announcement of Helldivers 3. Its existence shows that Arrowhead is exploring another project alongside its current game, but the interview does not establish a release schedule or a finished product ready to show.

There is also a distinction between assigning people to a prototype and moving the main development team onto a sequel. Early experiments can test an idea before a studio commits to full production, while the existing game continues to need updates and maintenance.

A Sequel Would Have to Offer Something Different

“The biggest competitor to a Helldivers 3 would be Helldivers 2,” Pilestedt told the outlet. His concern is that replacing the current game would ask players to start again, while its community is still giving people reasons to return.

That tension follows from the way Helldivers 2 is structured. The official listing describes a third-person shooter built around squads of up to four players, shared missions and a wider Galactic War. Capturing planets and defending against invasions contribute to the collective campaign.

Players coordinate equipment, call in stratagems and manage the risk of friendly fire. In a cooperative game, familiarity with those systems and with regular teammates becomes part of the experience. A new numbered release would need a reason for groups to leave that established routine.

A sufficiently different game could serve another kind of session or appeal to a different audience. Arrowhead has not announced what that difference would be, so the comments should not be read as a tease for a particular genre or a new Helldivers project.

One Existing Game Across Three Platforms

The community Arrowhead is supporting already reaches PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. The studio’s Xbox announcement brought the game to Microsoft’s consoles on August 26, 2025, with cross-play allowing players across platforms to join the same fight.

That approach brings more people into an existing game rather than requiring a sequel to expand its audience. For friends on different hardware, the practical benefit is access to the same cooperative sessions.

Cross-play should not be confused with automatically carrying purchases or saved progress to another platform. We have explained those separate features in our beginner’s guide, which is useful when deciding whether to change where a game is played.

Support also includes routine technical work. Arrowhead’s October 22 hotfix for Helldivers 2, version 7.2.1, targeted a crash that could occur when another player joined or left a squad. That is a concrete example of maintenance for the current experience, separate from adding new content.

Pilestedt’s position is therefore about how the series should grow, rather than a promise that it will never receive another installment. For now, Arrowhead’s stated direction is continued work on Helldivers 2, with a different project still at the prototype stage.
